The Golden Beach Residence - completed mid 2014 - was a renovation of an existing concrete block two bedroom home, located near the ocean on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Queensland. The client had a small budget and elected to manage the project through to construction themselves. The additions provided a double car garage, two additional bedrooms and a new open living, kitchen and dining.
The key challenges driving this design included a west facing rear yard and the likelihood of future neighbouring development on both sides. The new rear extension introduces a high raking roof which pops up above the existing low roof to catch the eastern and northern light as well as improve the cross ventilation of the home. The layout of the home 'hugs' a mature poinciana tree in the rear yard, creating a central outdoor living space, essentially able to block out future neighbouring development - creating privacy and aspect and utilising the tree for shade.
The client had the following to say of their home:
"Just a short note to express our gratitude for the excellent job you have done on the design of our new home. Even though we had a short deadline and a tight budget, you delivered to us a home that is beyond our expectations. This is the first home we have ever lived in where we can say that we would not want to change a single thing. The home flows beautifully, not only in terms of design, but also in terms of function. Everything is in just the right place and every space in the home is just the right size for us. The way you have captured the breezes takes every advantage of our position near the water and the light throughout our home is perfect. Not only did you listen to our brief, you enhanced it with design features we would not have considered. "
